Wheatley, ON

For its residents, “rain or shine” is an all-too-familiar term. And for the onions and other vegetables grown in the region, that’s just fine.

Farm

Southwestern, Ontario does one thing, really, really well. And that thing is onion-growing. The process begins in a climate-controlled facility. Then, months later, each onion is planted by hand.

Food

Southwestern Ontario is one of the province’s key vegetable-growing regions. Not only does it produce a variety of potatoes including russet, red, white, yellow, purple, and orange, it’s home to our appetizer facility, where we make specialty products like fresh cut chips, seasoned potatoes, onion rings, cheese sticks, and crispy-coated vegetables.

Family

It takes a special kind of farmer to succeed in southwestern Ontario, where weather is unpredictable, and crops are fragile.

Sustainability

Working closely with farmers in Southwestern Ontario to ensure best practices is one way we do right by the environment.

Here are some more:

  • Our Energy Efficiency Teams continue to examine the agriculture industry as a whole, and create environmentally friendlier ways to work the land.
  • Almost all the waste (4,500 tons) from our plant in Wheatley is diverted away from the landfill to a local biogas plant.
  • Our Russet type Prospect Potato is a proprietary variety developed by agricultural experts that grows faster, and requires less water, less fertilizer, and less pest control application. This means more potatoes, fewer footprints!
