Ingredients and Allergens

Individuals with food allergies, sensitivities, or intolerances, must avoid specific foods and ingredients containing allergens as an important practice within their daily personal health management program.  Cavendish Farms complies with federal allergen labeling regulations that require the disclosure of allergen containing ingredients within the ingredient listing as well as a “contains” statement following the list of ingredients.  Cavendish Farms encourages everyone to carefully read the ingredient declaration of all pre-packaged foods as formulations and recipes may change over time.  Cavendish Farms manufacturing facilities produce a wide range of products, some with and many without allergen ingredients.  Where allergens are in a recipe, we have integrated practices, policies, and procedures that ensure our facility control measures meet and exceed internal, customer, and regulatory requirements for allergen management.  For example, products containing allergens are always scheduled following non-allergen containing products.

Cavendish Farms does not currently make allergen free claims, due to the additional control measures and third-party certifications required to state with certainty our products are allergen free, per the federal regulatory definitions.

We cannot make a claim of vegan on any of our products, as we do not have the proper certification. However, the majority of our products do not contain animal by-products. Please always remember to consult the ingredient declaration.

All of our products have an oil statement that, at minimum, states "contains soy and/or canola oil". However, Cavendish Farms uses soybean oil that is highly refined to remove all traces of the allergen. Some products do in fact contain soy-based ingredients however. There is an ingredient declaration on all of our products listing the ingredients including any allergens and anyone with allergies should always read the ingredient declarations as an added precaution.

The canola oil we purchase and list on our ingredient listings is refined, bleached, and deodorized that removes all residual protein.  In saying that, we would like to point out that Health Canada does not consider canola a reportable allergen, in fact it does not consider it an allergenic substance.

Guar gum is a thickener for the French fry coating, sourced from guar beans.

SAP is a mineral based ingredient that preserves the color of the frozen French fries.  It is widely used in the food industry.

The color used in our potato products is simply a combination of natural color, which adds visual appeal to our French fries or potatoes products.

The line that produces our allergen battered products could be the same line that is used to produce our non-allergen products. However, our packaging/production plans are designed that the allergen product is produced at the end of a production cycle and, of course, followed by thorough clean up in order to eliminate traces of the allergen.

Health and Nutrition

Black spots are usually bruises which are caused by rough handling. One type of bruising happens when the skin is broken. The potato forms a thicker layer of skin to protect and/or heal the wound.

The second type of bruising shows up just under the skin or deeper inside the potato as a blackspot. This happens when potatoes are dropped more than six inches or something heavy is placed on top of them.

Potatoes are healthy! One medium, baked potato only contains about 100 calories. Baked or boiled potatoes are already conveniently portioned, making it easy to control the calories. Remember, it is the extras, such as butter or sour cream added during or after the preparation, that increase the number of calories!

For delicious and healthy potato topping ideas, try substituting these low-fat alternatives: yogurt with chives; whipped low-fat cottage cheese blended with lemon juice; grated parmesan cheese; calorie-reduced salad dressings; or a mixture of herbs.

Cavendish Farms uses only 100% vegetable oil in the preparation of all of our frozen potato products. This vegetable oil may contain one of more of the following oils: soybean oil and/or canola oil.

Crop protectants may be used while growing our potato crops. At Cavendish Farms we have rigorous controls in place to ensure that any protectants are applied in compliance with applicable government regulations and in respect to the environment.
